Pomegranate seed extract reduced allergic asthma symptoms in clinical trial

In a clinical trial, people with allergic asthma who used pomegranate seed extract for eight weeks had improved breathing patterns and reduced limitation of activities due to asthma symptoms compared to a placebo group.1 This trial is the first to evaluate the impact of pomegranate extract in humans with allergic asthma.

Asthma is a lung condition the airways narrow and swell due to chronic inflammation. Symptoms of asthma include difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness. However, patients are generally symptom-free between acute episodes. Pomegranate has antioxidant and inflammation-modulating properties that could help explain its benefits in this condition.

By the end of the trial, the group that received pomegranate showed significantly reduced levels of two types of asthma-associated white blood cells, eosinophils and neutrophils, in comparison with measurements obtained at the beginning of the trial.

The trial included 64 men and women with allergic asthma who received 250 mg pomegranate seed extract or a placebo twice per day for eight weeks. At the beginning and end of the study, asthma symptoms were evaluated, and blood samples were analyzed for white blood cell counts.

At the end of the trial, daytime and nighttime shortness of breath, and activity limitation due to asthma symptoms improved among the group who received pomegranate seed extract compared to the placebo group. The findings were reported on January 25, 2023, in Frontiers in Pharmacology.

Apply What You’ve Learned: Pomegranate

  • Pomegranate (Punica granatum) has long been used for its medicinal properities.2 Its fruit, seeds and flowers are a source of beneficial compounds with antioxidant and inflammation-modulating properties.
  • Pomegranate has shown promise for heart disease. In one study, patients diagnosed with unstable angina (chest pain caused by heart disease) who received pomegranate juice daily for five days experienced significant decreases in angina occurrence, duration and intensity, and a reduction in a marker of oxidative stress.3 A review of clinical studies of pomegranate indicated a beneficial role for pomegranate in vascular diseases including high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and peripheral artery disease.3
  • Pomegranate contains compounds known as punicalagins and ellagitannins which, when digested, may be precursors for urolithin A. A preclinical study showed that urolithin A helped rejuvenate mitochondria, the cells’ power plants, extended life span, and improved activity levels.4
  • While pomegranates are time-consuming to eat and may not always be widely available, pomegranate capsules are a convenient alternative that can provide standardized pomegranate extracts.

Maintain Youthful Urinary Flow
By Chancellor Faloon

Enlargement of the prostate gland (benign prostate hypertrophy, or BPH) in aging men results in urinary tract symptoms that include frequent urination, a sudden need to urinate, nighttime visits to the bathroom and more. While the drug tamsulosin is frequently prescribed for men with prostate enlargement, some men find its side effects intolerable.

At least six months of treatment with an extract of the saw palmetto plant is associated with similar benefits as tamsulosin with a lower risk of decreased libido or ejaculation disorders. Its active ingredient, beta-sitosterol, can be used along with saw palmetto for added effect. Other nutrients that support prostate health include nettle, pumpkin seed, Pygeum africanum, Indian frankincense, flower pollen, Norway spruce, boron and lycopene.
