More About Melatonin

What is melatonin?

Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone in your body that is produced by the pineal gland. You can thank your pineal gland for helping maintain your body's internal clock—signaling when it is time to wind down for the night and when to get up in the morning. As you age, your pineal gland may produce less melatonin—and that can mean you're not sleeping as much or as restfully as you should.

If you find yourself tossing and turning more than you'd like to, a melatonin supplement can help you get the ZZZs you need.

What does melatonin do?

Melatonin works together with your circadian rhythm, which helps support your natural sleep cycle. Jet lag, exposure to light at night, as well as natural dips in melatonin production that occur with age can all impact your circadian rhythm. Incorporating a melatonin supplement helps support that internal clock so you can get you back to a regular sleep schedule.

How much melatonin should I take?

A high dose of melatonin isn't necessarily more effective than a lower one—everyone is unique, and a lower dosage might do the trick for you. Also consider an extended-release formula if your goal is an uninterrupted sleep session. Always speak with a doctor before starting a melatonin regimen as everyone has unique health needs. Additionally, make sure you read the label properly and don't take more than the recommended dosage.

How long does it take for melatonin to work?

Take melatonin 30 minutes to 1 hour before bedtime and make sure you are committed to going to sleep for the night. For optimal sleep, melatonin should be just one element of a regular nighttime ritual. In addition to supplements, try to make sure your head hits the pillow night after night at the same time and turn off screens (including your smartphone) an hour before bed.
