Methylmalonic Acid Blood Test
Item # LC706961
Use this test to assess early deficiency in vitamin B12
Increased Methylmalonic acid (MMA) levels are often associated with early stages of B12 deficiency. A MMA blood test may be ordered along with a homocysteine test when a vitamin B12 deficiency is suspected.
Vitamin B12 is necessary for red blood cell production from bone marrow. When B12 levels are low, red blood cell production decreases, resulting in anemia. As B12 status declines, B12-dependent enzymes no longer function properly and normal metabolism is consequently impaired, leading to a build-up of methylmalonic acid (MMA). Age-stratified serum MMA values have been observed to be consistent with the prevalence of Vitamin B12 deficiency in the elderly population.1
Note
Blood testing is the preferred and most common way to measure MMA, However, early morning-urine testing offers a convenient at-home method of testing MMA status. The easiest option to obtain an early morning MMA urine measurement is with the at-home B12 Functional Status test, LC100099.
