Human Herpes Virus 6 IgG Antibodies (HHV-6) Blood Test

Tests for HHV-6 exposure, associated with fatigue & fibromyalgia
What we commonly refer to as herpes, or HHV-6, is composed of two viruses, HHV-6A and HHV-6B. Testing for the virus's IgG antibody is important since a high value may indicate infection or reactivation.
This test measures total antibodies (IgG) for Human Herpes Virus 6 (HHV-6). HHV-6 is composed of two herpes viruses known as HHV-6A and HHV-6B. These viruses typically infect people before the age of 2, resulting in a common rash known as roseola. The CDC estimates that nearly 100% of Americans have been infected and classify it as an emerging pathogen.1 Like other herpes viruses, such as chicken pox, HHV-6 establishes life-long latency which can become reactivated later in life due to suppression of the immune system or simply as a result of the aging process. Our immune systems are usually very good at bottling up herpes viruses; however, a key feature of the HHV-6 lifestyle is its ability to infect and survive in the cells of the immune system. Reactivation can be dangerous is some people as the virus is able to evade immune system control. Some researchers believe that HHV-6 may trigger and perpetuate fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) in certain people. That's why testing for the virus's IgG antibody is so important since a high value may indicate a recent infection or a current chronic infection. Instructions Fasting is not required. Take all medications as prescribed. References
