Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) Growth Hormone Marker Blood Test
Item # LC010363
Useful proxy biomarker to assess levels of growth hormone
Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1, a.k.a. somatomedin C) is a marker of growth hormone (GH) secretion. Due to GH’s short half-life in the body, blood testing for IGF-1 is a more reliable indicator of GH levels than testing for GH itself.
Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), also called somatomedin C, is primarily produced by the liver as an endocrine hormone and plays an influential role in virtually every system from muscle, bone, and connective tissue growth and repair, to the selective regulation of various aspects of metabolism, as well as helping maintain normal brain function and cardiac health. Growth hormone (GH) secretion falls precipitously with advancing age, commonly known as somatopause. This decline is also mirrored by diminishing IGF-1 levels. GH has a very short half-life which makes it unreliable to test in order to get an accurate representation of its own, actual level. However, IGF-1 appears constant over a 24-hour period, making it useful as a bio-marker to help assess blood levels of GH. Instructions Fasting is not required for this test. Take all medications as prescribed. |
