Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Antibodies, IgG Blood Test
Item # LC006494
Tests for past exposure to the Herpes Virus Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
Testing for blood levels of IgG antibodies to cytomegalovirus can indicate past exposure to the virus, which infects an estimated 60-90% of adults. Chronic infection can have a negative impact on the immune system.
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a member of the herpes virus family that includes the two well-known herpes viruses (I and II), the chickenpox virus, and the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). All of these viruses commonly infect humans, and all persist in our bodies for our lifetimes once we have been infected. When someone is first infected with the virus, it may produce symptoms indistinguishable from infectious mononucleosis, such as fever, fatigue, muscle aches, enlarged spleen, and liver inflammation. IgG is an antibody. Antibodies are proteins produced by our immune system when we have some kind of infection. IgG antibodies typically remain for a person’s lifetime and usually indicate that a person had the infection at some point in the past (non-acute). Instructions Fasting is not required for this test. Take all medications as prescribed. |
