This is a test to check for immunity to the hepatitis B virus (HBV), which can cause a potentially serious disease of the liver.
Hepatitis B is an infectious disease affecting the liver, caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The infection is often asymptomatic, but once established, it can progress to chronic scarring of the liver (fibrosis and cirrhosis). Approximately 1.2 million people in the United States have hepatitis B and most are unaware of their infection.1 The presence of the hepatitis B surface antibody is generally interpreted as indicating recovery and immunity from the viral infection. This antibody also develops in a person who has been successfully vaccinated against hepatitis B. If you want to know whether you’re immune to the hepatitis B virus, then this is the test to order.
