Estradiol Blood Test
Item # LC004515
Measures levels of estradiol, a prominent form of estrogen
This blood test measures estradiol, the most abundant form of the hormone estrogen produced by women and men (in lower quantities). Aging can impact this hormone, which affects bone health, heart health, nerves and metabolism.
Estradiol (E2) is the predominant sex hormone present in females and is also found at lower levels in men. It represents the major estrogen in humans. Estradiol not only impacts reproductive and sexual functioning, but also affects other systems including bone health, heart health, nerves, and metabolism. E2 is the most active of all three estrogens commonly measured in a clinical setting. For women, it is important to compare the relationship between estradiol and progesterone in evaluating menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, mood disorders, and aging skin. In men, high levels of estradiol are associated with abdominal fat, enlargement of the prostate, and cardiovascular risk. In both men and women, low levels of estradiol are associated with osteoporosis. Instructions Fasting is not required for this test. Take all medications as prescribed. If you are supplementing with any hormones, we suggest taking them approximately 2 hours prior to having your blood drawn to see peak levels. Hormones are best drawn between 8-10 AM. Hormonal contraceptives can interfere with progesterone and estrogen results. Pre-menopausal women: For a 28 day cycle, blood should be drawn on day 21 (day 1 is the day that bleeding begins). For longer or shorter cycles, count 8 days back from the day your next menstruation would start. Post-menopausal women: Blood can be drawn any day of the month. |
