Berberine is an alkyloid antioxidant compound that occurs in Indian barberry and other medicinal plants. Indian barberry has a long history of use in traditional Indian medicine. Berberine’s support of metabolic health includes maintenance of healthy blood glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride and insulin levels, as supported by clinical trial findings.1-5 Berberine’s support of healthy glucose may be due in part to an ability to inhibit dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP IV), which the mechanisms of action of a class of drugs that help maintain healthy glucose levels.
