Measuring prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels can help detect benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and/or prostate cancer. This test also measures the percentage of free prostate specific antigen relative to the total amount; a lower percentage of free PSA may indicate the need for further testing.
This panel contains the following tests:
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is produced exclusively by cells of the prostate gland. Used in conjunction with the digital rectal examination, PSA is a useful screening test for benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer development. Free PSA is a newer evaluation for prostate health. This test is used to measure the percentage of free PSA relative to the total amount. Although not used as an initial screening test, a lower percentage of free PSA might mean your doctor needs to do a further testing on the prostate gland. Instructions Fasting is not required for this test. Take all medications as prescribed. Note Ejaculation within 48 hours preceding the blood draw may elevate the PSA in some men. |
