Prostate-specific Antigen (PSA), Ultrasensitive Blood Test

Item # LC140723

Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is produced primarily by cells of the prostate gland. Monitoring blood levels of PSA can be a useful screening tool for the development or progression of prostate cancer.

Important - This test is intended for use as an aid in the management of patients following surgical or medical treatment for prostate cancer (i.e. prostatectomy). It is not appropriate for standard prostate cancer screening; ultrasensitive PSA was specifically designed for those who need detection of PSA at very low levels after surgical or medical treatment of the prostate, with the results monitored by the treating physician for changes in PSA over time.

Instructions

Fasting is not required for this test. Take all medications as prescribed.

Note:

Ejaculation within 48 hours preceding the blood draw may elevate the PSA in some men. The test has a reference interval of 0.000-4.000 ng/mL. Values obtained with different assay testing methods from different labs should not be used interchangeably in monitoring ultrasensitive PSA. It is recommended that only one assay method be used consistently to monitor each patient's course of therapy.
