Adrenocorticotropic Hormone, also known as ACTH, is a test for pituitary function and is useful in evaluating conditions associated with excessive or deficient cortisol production in your body. Signs that you may have too much cortisol include:

Normally, ACTH will be at its highest level in the morning and lowest at night. Upon waking, ACTH stimulates the production of cortisol and both show a diurnal variation. Conditions that affect the production of ACTH and cortisol often disrupt this variation, which is why it is important to evaluate them together. Instructions Fasting is not required for this test. Take all medications as prescribed. ACTH should be drawn between 7-10 AM. |
