Fibrinogen is a protein that is converted to fibrin, which helps form blood clots and is needed to prevent bleeding disorders. Increased fibrinogen activity is associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular events.

The fibrinogen test is used to detect suspected bleeding disorders or abnormal blood clotting. Traditionally this test is used to identify congenital (genetic) problems called afibrinogenemia, disseminated intravascular coagulation, or elevated fibrinolytic activity. Life Extension® has identified fibrinogen as an independent risk factor as an elevated blood level increases your risk for coronary heart disease and ischemic stroke. Instructions Fasting is not required for this test. Take all medications as prescribed. Note Individuals using oral contraceptives are found to have increased levels. |
